Introducing the Ford Fathom: What to Know About Ford’s New Electric Truck

Ford is getting ready to introduce something entirely new to its lineup.

Meet the Ford Fathom™, an all-new midsize electric truck arriving in 2027. With a starting MSRP of $28,350, a spacious interior, new technology and Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform underneath it, the Fathom represents an exciting next step for Ford electric vehicles.

And while there is still more to learn before it arrives, Ford has already given us a good look at what shoppers can expect.

What Is the Ford Fathom?

The Ford Fathom is a new midsize electric truck and the first vehicle produced on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. It introduces a new nameplate to the Ford lineup and will serve as the first vehicle built on the automaker’s new EV architecture.

Ford says the name “Fathom” reflects the idea of deeply understanding how people live and designing a vehicle around those needs. The name also traces back to a measurement based on the span of a person’s outstretched arms before eventually becoming a word associated with understanding something deeply.

That focus on everyday usability shows up in the truck’s packaging. Ford projects the Fathom will have more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, seat five adults and include both a frunk and truck bed for additional cargo flexibility.

How Much Will the Ford Fathom Cost?

One of the biggest pieces of news surrounding the Fathom is its price.

Ford has announced a starting MSRP of $28,350 with the standard-range battery. That price does not include destination and delivery charges or dealer documentation fees. Ford currently lists destination and delivery at $1,595.

Additional pricing, configurations and other vehicle details are expected as the Fathom gets closer to launch.

When Can You Preorder the Ford Fathom?

Ford says preorders for the Fathom will begin in early 2027. The automaker has not yet provided all of the details surrounding the preorder process, configurations or dealer availability.

Ford has confirmed the Fathom is coming in 2027, but a more specific timeline for when customers will begin seeing the truck at dealerships has not yet been announced.

The Fathom is being positioned as a more attainable electric truck, but Ford isn’t holding back on technology.

Ford has confirmed that the Fathom will offer:

• Bidirectional power capability
• A large touchscreen display
• Navigation powered by Apple Maps
• Digital Key
• Remote vehicle control through the Ford app
• Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility

Ford says Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Digital Key and Ford app remote-control functionality will be standard. Every Fathom will also be BlueCruise capable. Ford notes that BlueCruise must be activated for use and provides hands-off, eyes-on driver assistance on designated Hands-Free Blue Zones.

That combination helps position the Fathom as more than simply a smaller electric truck. Ford is building it around the technology and connectivity many drivers already use every day.

What Is Bidirectional Power?

One feature worth watching closely is the Fathom’s bidirectional power capability.

With a traditional EV charging setup, electricity flows into the vehicle to charge its battery. Bidirectional capability allows a properly equipped vehicle to both receive electricity and send stored energy back out to a compatible external load.

Ford has confirmed that the Fathom will support bidirectional power, but it has not yet announced the full details of how that capability will work on the truck, what additional equipment may be required or the specific ways owners will be able to use it.

What We’re Still Waiting to Learn

The Fathom is still in the early stages of its introduction, so Ford has not released every specification shoppers will eventually want to know.

Ford’s current Fathom information does not yet provide final figures for driving range, towing and payload capability, charging speeds or the complete trim and configuration lineup.

Those details will help paint a much fuller picture of where the Fathom fits within Ford’s truck lineup as we get closer to 2027.

For now, what Ford has revealed is enough to make the Fathom one of the most interesting new vehicles to watch.
